A new year means new beginnings and new goals. Why not a new beauty routine as well? Manolo offers 14 tips to keep you beautiful in ’14.
1. Be nicer to your hair
Give your hair a rest from heat styling products when you don’t really need them and let your hair air dry instead of blow drying. When you do use heat styling products, always apply a significant amount of heat protecting hair care products or cream. Invest in quality, well-designed hair devices and products that will preserve the natural oils in your hair.
Come in to the salon for a Keratin treatment to revitalize the quality of your hair from the inside.
2. Moisturize More
Hydration is everything! Lotions can work wonders for your skin when used properly. Moisturizers are not one-size-fits- all; one of our esthetician can help you determine the right lotions for your skin type. You should have at least three: one for your face, your eyes and your body.
There are premium products available online and in our salons. Try the hydration products from Guinot’s exclusive skin care line.
3. Break out of the Box
It’s a new year – try something new! Have you been eyeballing those metallic liners? Go for it! Try out some of those new makeup techniques you’ve been reading about. Been thinking about getting bangs? Free the fringe! Come in to the salon to try a new style, update your hair color or mix up your manicure with one of the more than 200 shades of OPI nail colors we offer.
It’s no secret that drinking water is important for overall good health, but there are benefits for your skin as well. Drinking water helps eliminate toxins from your body so acne breakouts are less likely and proper hydration will help to eliminate sunken eyes and circles under the eyes.
Also, use a humidifier. Besides helping you breathe easy, humidifiers infuse the air with moisture, soothing dried out, cracked skin.
5. Embrace Bronzer
Using a bronzing powder will highlight and contour your face and give you a healthy, natural looking tan year round. One of our stylists can help you select the right shade – one that is not too dark or too strong. A bronzer about two shades darker than your natural skin tone should do the trick.
Be sure to use the right foundation. If you’re going to wear makeup under your bronzer, you want to switch to a slightly darker base color and wear your foundation a little warmer. Finally, think in threes. With a brush, create the number “3” on both sides of your face.
6. Massage your scalp
When you shampoo your hair, spend a little extra time massaging your scalp. Massaging any part of the body increases blood flow. This is especially helpful with scalp massage, because it doesn’t just benefit the skin and scalp itself, but also the hair follicles and hair. This increased circulation can stimulate the follicles in such a way that hair will grow faster, which is a great benefit for those who want long locks.
At Manolo Salons we provide a soothing scalp massage as part of any hair treatment or styling appointment. We also offer premium scalp treatment products from René Furterer at the salon and our online store that you can use at home.
7. Concentrate on the ends
In general, the ends of your hair get drier than the hair around your scalp. When you condition your hair, apply it to the bottom 3/4 of your hair and avoid the roots.
Also, a hair mask will also condition the ends and prevent damage. Try a gentle hydro-nutritive mask or an anti-frizz mask from René Furterer. These products are available at the salon and our online store. Finally, know that using a real bristle hair brush reduces split ends.
8. Dry before you style
Never use a heated styling tool on wet or even damp hair. This can cause irreparable damage, so be sure your hair is completely dry before using a curling iron or hair straightener. And by the way, always comb your hair when it’s wet, don’t brush.
9. Maintain your mane
Get regular trims to keep your hair healthy and allow it to grow quicker. Fit in a visit to the salon every 6-8 weeks.
10. Pump up the protein
Damaged hair lacks protein, generally through over processing the hair with color or styling. This requires protein rich shampoos and conditioners – try the Resistance range by Kérastase. Be sure not to over use the product and discontinue use once the damage is repaired.
It lights up your face! A smile is programmed to exercise the facial muscles, making the face glow and become more firm and supple. A smile also coaxes the brain to produce endorphins, which are hormones designed to reduce physical and emotional pain and to bring a general feeling of well-being to the body.
To perfect your pout, exfoliate your lips before applying any color to remove the dry, dead skin covering the beautiful soft lips underneath. For a soft, romantic look, opt for a soft pink lip gloss with brown undertones. This shade is pretty, subtle and looks great on everyone. Be sure to line your lips with a pencil liner close to your natural lip color before applying color.
12. Update your makeup bag
Makeup brushes are an important part of your beauty routine, and they require care to stay clean and bacteria free. If you notice that they are shedding, are misshapen or you are having acne breakouts, it could be time to replace your brushes.
Pencil eyeliner and eye shadow should be replaced every 3 to 6 months. Eye makeup is the first product that you should replace before anything else, since they are the number one product that bacteria like to live on. The applicators for eye shadow should be replaced along with the eye shadow.
You should replace your mascara about every 3 months. The brush and tube can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Liquid foundation and concealer should be replaced about every 6 months. If the liquid starts to get grainy or extra-thick, then it’s time to toss.
13. Don’t leave home without SPF
Always apply sunscreen on your face, neck and hands. These are the areas that show signs of aging the fastest, so don’t let the UV rays of the sun snatch away your youthful glow. We love Donceur De Vie face cream with SPF 15 from Guinot. (Available at the salon or our online shop.) In addition to the many moisturizers that contain SPF, there are also many makeup products – like foundations, powders and lip glosses- that offer protection from damaging rays as well.
14. Pamper your feet
The feet are perhaps the most overstressed part of the body. Don’t ignore them. Massage your feet with oil or soak them in shampoo mixed in lukewarm water for 15 minutes after walking for too long. Regular spa pedicures are a relaxing way to be better to your feet, and it’s not just a luxury; there are health benefits too! Come in to the salon for a pedicure or heel treatment given in a Sanijet Pipeless Hydromassage Foot Bath.
We hope that these 14 tips from Manolo will help make ’14 a beautiful year!
