Making a strong first impression is critical for success in all aspects of life. You have 15 seconds to make your mark on any new person you meet – a potential employer, client or date – and those first impressions are hard to change. International stylist and image consultant Manolo offers these four tips to ensure that your first impression is one of your best assets!
Get a great hairstyle.
A flattering cut and style that works with your hair type and complements your face shape is the cornerstone of any refined image. Even though you might want to go to the salon with a picture of your favorite celebrity hairstyle; your hairstyle should be individually tailored for your look and lifestyle. A good stylist will know how cut your hair to enhance or conceal certain facial features. Of course your hair looks great the day you visit the salon, but it’s important to have a hairstyle that you can easily do yourself and maintain at home so that you look great every day. Beyond improving your overall outside appearance, a great hairstyle will boost your confidence.
Wear this, not that.
When trying on clothing, remember that form and fit matter more than the size on the tag. Wearing clothes that are either too big or too small does not reflect a polished image and will often unintentionally bring focus to the very features that you want played down. Don’t wear clothes or shoes that hurt or don’t fit properly. Either you’ll wear them and look uncomfortable and self-conscious or they’ll never leave the closet. Use your wardrobe to celebrate your body, not punish it.
A professional image consultant can perform a color analysis to determine which colors of clothing and cosmetics complement or clash with the tones in your hair, eyes and skin. A body shape analysis can show you which clothing styles, proportions, lengths and accessories are flattering for your body type and which to avoid.
Practice proper grooming.
The basics – shower or bathe daily, use deodorant, brush and floss your teeth regularly. Adopt a signature scent and spritz a small amount of perfume or cologne on your pulse points when getting dressed. Keep fingernails and toenails clean and trimmed and don’t bite them.
Consider a monthly spa visit. A manicure and pedicure from a spa professional is a relaxing way to maintain soft, healthy and well-groomed hands and feet. Most spas also offer eyebrow tweezing, threading or waxing treatments to help keep facial and body hair in check.
Put your best face forward.
The type of skin care routine that you follow is important for a healthy skin complexion that is beautiful and glowing. Proper cleansing, moisturizing and always wearing SPF is a start, but there are a number of skin therapies available to help treat different skin types and concerns. Among the most well-known facial treatments is microdermabrasion, which treats acne, acne scars, sun damage and hyperpigmentation. An experienced esthetician can also recommend treatments for dehydrated and sensitive skin, dull and uneven skin or wrinkles and mature skin.
Learn what skin care and cosmetic products are best for you. An image consultant can help you select the most flattering colors of lipstick, blush and other makeup products and can also demonstrate proper application techniques. A custom formula foundation that is created to perfectly match your skin will give your makeup a more polished appearance than one selected from the drug store shelf.
